How to Dowse with a Pendulum

Dowsing over essencesLearning how to dowse with a pendulum is a useful and easy skill to develop. A small pendulum can be carried with you quite discreetly and used for a variety of things. For example, you can use a pendulum to dowse for flower essences and other remedies, or to check food in the stores if you have an intolerance.

The idea of using a pendulum is to gain yes/no answers to questions that you would like to have answered, such as “Is this flower essence good for me to take right now?” whilst dowsing over the bottle. When a pendulum is held and asked such a question, it will swing either clockwise or anti-clockwise to indicate the yes or no answer.

First, of course, you need a pendulum. There are many beautiful pendulums on the market these days. You can buy crystal ones, ones made of precious stones, metal or wood. We’ve written a page about pendulums so that you can have more information if you need it. The rest of this page assumes you have your pendulum ready!

There are three main things to get right when you dowse with a pendulum. Firstly, you need to work out which direction is yes, and which is no. Secondly, you need to make sure that you have framed your question very carefully. Thirdly, it is really important to have a level of detachment from the answer.

I’ll go into all these points below:

Getting Yes and No with your Pendulum

Pendulum being heldTake your pendulum and hold it by the chain so that pendulum is hanging down. It doesn’t matter how long the chain is, but you will find that you get a quicker answer, and you can be more discreet, with a shorter chain.

Hold the pendulum by its chain between your thumb and forefinger so that it hangs down and can swing freely (see picture).

Although it is possible for the pendulum to move from this position into a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, it can take some time for this to happen, especially when learning. However, if you swing the pendulum deliberately backwards and forwards, the momentum has begun and it takes much less time for the pendulum to swing to either yes or no.

Now you need to find out which way your pendulum will move for yes. Note that different people can find that it moves a different way – for example, my pendulum moves clockwise for yes, whereas Chris’ pendulum goes anti-clockwise for yes.

Clear your mind of things as much as possible, focus on the present moment and say to your pendulum “Indicate yes”. Repeat this statement at intervals to maintain your focus and soon your pendulum will start to move clockwise or anti-clockwise. This is your yes.

Once you have established yes, ask the pendulum to indicate no. The pendulum will swing the other way.

It is interesting to note that the pendulum moves because of the muscles in your arms making it move that way. It is not magic – the pendulum does not move of its own accord. This is why we believe (although it is not proven) that the pendulum is a way of accessing your intuition. Your mind, at a subconscious level, is literally telling the pendulum which way to move.

Some people find that, at the beginning, their pendulum will swing a different way each time for yes and then for no. You can be firm with your pendulum. Tell it that you would like clockwise to be yes every time, and anti-clockwise to be no every time.

Framing your Question

It’s important to think carefully about exactly what it is you want to ask. The question must obviously have a yes/no answer and be as specific as possible.

For example, asking “Is this flower essence the best one for me?” excludes other essences that might be good now. It would be better to ask “Is this flower essence good for me right now?”

If you’re getting odd answers, it might be worth thinking more carefully about how you phrase the question.

Wishful Thinking

“Wishful thinking destroys accuracy!” was Arthur’s mantra when teaching dowsing. If you have a vested interest in the answer, it is all too easy to influence the direction in which the pendulum swings.

You need to be able to detach yourself from the potential outcome. For this reason, it is really difficult to obtain reliable answers to questions such as, “what sex is my baby going to be?” or “what numbers will come up in the lottery this week?”

These are all highly emotive questions, and it is very difficult to maintain the kind of emotional distance that you would need in order to get a reliable response.

To get accurate results with dowsing, we need to allow some space for our intuition to respond. If you practice meditation, this is the kind of quiet peace that works best. Our ego needs to take a back seat and allow the answers to come in without judgement.

You can use flower essences to help to build up the links between left and right mind, and to encourage more access to your intuitive self. See below for the best ones to help.
